Going back to basics, how about just a complex pencil drawing? This was a cool image grabbed because of all the fancy cross-hatching (I had the lightbox assignment to do in pen and ink, so I wanted crosshatch practice), as well as the fact that I was bored drawing humans.

You know how hard it is to find drawings of dragons or anthromorphs from master artists? Very. I had to settle for a horse's skull. Ah well, the drawing itself was fun, and although I still don't like how my shading -- or in the vernacular of the art world, rendering -- turned out, I think I'm getting better at it. And that's the goal, ne?  :)
